Green Logistics

Cecilia Toth – Intern logistics NHL Stenden

My name is Cecília Tóth, I am a fourth-year Logistics Management student from Hungary. I have been completing a Bachelor study at NHL Stenden in Emmen for the last 3.5 years. In February 2024 I started working on my graduation project at Cycle-Up in Leeuwarden.

As a Green Logistics Intern, I am responsible for conducting research on efficient waste collection techniques, route optimisation design, cost and environmental impact minimisation opportunities related to three waste streams, including spent coffee grounds, old bread and used bottles. Cycle-Up being a circular start-up is aiming to provide waste collection services to its customers that are as efficient and sustainable as possible. This way, more and more partners with great potential are expected to join the ever-growing community that Cycle-Up is part of.

By the end of my internship, I am expected to present a viable waste collection design that involves details on pick-up scheduling, vehicle layout and available smart technologies that could potentially optimize the waste collection operations of Cycle-Up.

The start-up recently opened its new HUB located in Leeuwarden together with its circular partners. That is where I am able to work on my project, attend meetings and events, talk to stakeholders and learn about new ways to not see residue as waste anymore, but rather as an opportunity to create something better. What I especially like about the new HUB is its open atmosphere that helps us brainstorm freely throughout the day and constantly improve the community.
